The director of Orion Telecom spoke about the development of the provider’s security after cyber attacks in 2025

15 April 10:15
Executive Director of the Siberian provider “Orion” Telecom” Denis Yakunin, in an interview with SecPost, spoke about a series of cyber attacks in 2025, how they were arranged and what processes in the company had to be revised in order to protect the operator.
According to Denis Yakunin, “Orion TElekom” in past survived four massive cyber attacks this year, including the total destruction of infrastructure on June 12. The company's damage amounted to 66 million rubles.
“I would like to note that until June 2025, our company had not encountered such large-scale attacks at all. But we had no illusions that we should be attacked, because literally in April of the same year in our “mother” region, in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, one of the providers was already attacked. Attack on Orion Telecom “occurred on June 12, 2025, Russia Day. The attack was preceded by deep preliminary preparation. The goal of the attackers was very simple: the complete destruction of the company’s infrastructure,” Denis Yakunin said.
He noted that the attack was carried out by a professional hacker group. NThe attackers were assisted by the security forces of the unfriendly side.
“PAfter June 12, we survived three more attacks. It so happened that as a result of this incident we began to understand much more about information securitybegan to better understand how such attacks occur. And we acquired a certain kind of immunity, stability of information security – we withstood these attacks,” emphasized the head of the company.
PAfter the cyber attacks, the company reviewed its information security processes.
“Right after we recovered, we reviewed all company policies in this area: from password policies to the 3-2-1 method (backup method). But the most important thing we learned and changed was the introduction of a risk-based approach. ANDthe illusion that there is some kind of one hundred percent guarantee that if you buy all the boxes in the world, you will be totally protected – this illusion should not exist. Even if all the boxes in the world work, without adequate work of the anti-crisis team this will not be enough“, Denis Yakunin shared.
THe also added that the company has separate department for information security, which has the authority to manage the technical service.
“We continue to purchase systems both in terms of software and hardware for our protection. For us, this is planned work that we carry out systematically. But there is another part of our work – we are now conducting exercises, primarily with top personnel, so that our managers are prepared for crisis situations. We have several hundred employees in the telecom department alone. And it’s important for us to know exactly so that in each region, every manager at every level understands what the company will do when entering the next potential crisis: what can be said to clients, what cannot be said, how it is necessary to act in general,” said the director of Orion TElekom.”
