Pakistani authorities as mediators
The talks, mediated by the Pakistani authorities, are aimed at setting the agenda and format of future negotiations. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met separately with the Iranian and US delegations to enable a preliminary agreement on procedural issues.
The Iranian delegation is headed by the Speaker of Parliament, Mohammad Bager Ghalibaf, supported by Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi. The American delegation included Vice President JD Vance, Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the US president's son-in-law.
The war, which began six weeks ago, has heightened tensions in the Middle East region. Two days after the conflict began, Israel initiated an armed operation in southern Lebanon, the goal of which – according to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's declaration – is to defeat Hezbollah, financed by Iran.
