In an interview with PAP, the deputy head of the Ministry of Digitization (MC) announced that the European Commission (KE) would consider the application for the construction of the artificial intelligence in Poland – Baltic Ai Gigafactory – within a few months.

He added that the ministry is planning to contact the Commission in July.

The commission announced the construction of five to seven gigafabryk – he pointed out.

He explained that in the first recruitment, which ended on June 20, 76 applications submitted by 16 Member States were received. The applications apply to 60 different locations and amounted to a total of EUR 230 billion.

“This means that some countries have submitted several applications per location, according to the +or maybe they will succeed +” – said the deputy head of MC.

He added that after taking into account international consortia and repetitive conclusions, the target number of countries in which gigafabrics may arise between 10 and 12.

Standerski explained that the preliminary recruitment would serve the EC to accurately plan the financing and determine the terms of the second recruitment, which is to be announced at the end of this year. Another recruitment is already about specific locations and numbers.

“This is the first new initiative of the European Commission, because it is based on the involvement of various companies and countries at the same time. This is something that the Commission has not yet practiced when it comes to new technologies” – he emphasized.

In his opinion, our country's application for the construction of a gigafabryka is unique on a European scale, because it assumes the cooperation of several countries in one project: Poland, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia.

Standerski announced that MC provides the construction of Baltic Ai Gigafactory in two stages. The first is to buy microprocessors, which is already the case.

“We must remember how fast a cycle of their lives is, which is currently about 5 years. However, a new series of microprocessors, based on more modern technologies, enters the market more often than every two years” – he noted.

He added that the ministry wants the second stage of the Gigafabryka construction to be based on a newer series of microprocessors.

The construction of Baltic Ai Gigafactory is initially planned in a maximum of two locations in Poland, but the ministry has not yet made a final decision in this matter.

“The location will depend on several factors, mainly on the size of the investment and the possibilities of fiber optic connections,” said Standerski.

As he said, the challenge is not only the construction of the factory itself, but also the question of combining the largest AI centers in Poland and in the Baltic States.

When asked whether it is possible for Gigafabry to be created outside our country, Standerski replied: “None of our partners submitted such a conclusion, so we are not talking about it now.”

Asked whether it is possible for the commission to reject the Polish conclusion, emphasized that the ministry “will fight for this factory”. At the same time, he stipulated that he could not provide anything at this stage and – as he said – should simply be patiently waiting for the decision.

“Just as we waited for the Factory of Artificial Intelligence in Poznań, we will be waiting for gigafabryka,” he pointed out.

On June 20, the Ministry of Digitization announced that Poland, together with Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia, together with a consortium of private entrepreneurs and research institutes, submitted a request to the European Commission regarding the construction of Gigafabrika of Artificial Intelligence – Baltic Ai Gigafactory.

The project budget is EUR 3 billion, and Poland is its leader. Gigafabryka is to be designed to support the development, training and implement very large models and AI applications on an unprecedented scale; It is to be adapted to both the needs of training and inferences in AI models.

In February this year. The head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen announced that the EU Investai Fund, with a budget of EUR 20 billion, will finance five Gigafabryk artificial intelligence in the EU. She reported that gigafabrings are to combine powerful computing powers with low -emission data centers. Until June 20, 16 Member States sent 76 applications in this matter.

On Monday, the EC said that a large number of applications received significantly exceeded the committee's expectations. She emphasized that these conclusions are not formal applications, but an expression of interest. The goal was to gather early information from respondents, including European industry leaders, private and public investors from Europe and from outside it and Member States – it was indicated.

This information is to be used to create a non -binding list of potential candidates ready to create a gigafabrica.

As stated, the EC intends to invite you to submit official applications at the end of 2025.
