The new trolleybuses in Bucharest are equipped with an alcohol test. They don't start if the driver has been drinking

The new Chinese Yutong U12 electric trolleybuses, recently put into circulation in Bucharest, are equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the Bucharest Transport Society announced on Saturday. Among the most important features is a breathalyzer system.

“The new Yutong U12 trolleybuses come with state-of-the-art technology – the vehicle only starts if the driver passes the alcohol test,” STB said in a statement on its Facebook page on Saturday.

The people of Bucharest have had at their disposal, for a few days, the new Yutong U12 trolleybuses – the latest generation of electric vehicles in the STB fleet. The 22 trolleybuses are already in circulation on lines 86, 93 and 97.

According to STB, at the start of the shift, STB drivers must blow into a breathalyzer integrated into the system, and the vehicle only starts if the result is negative.

“These trolleybuses are equipped with an alcohol interlock type system. In short, it works like an alcohol test: before departure, the driver must blow into a device, and the vehicle only starts if the test is negative. It is a technology already used at European level to reduce risks and increase safety in public transport”, according to STB.

What other features do the new trolleybuses have?

The Yutong U12 offers air conditioning, USB sockets (type A and C), modern digital displays, a lowered floor with a ramp for easy access and a bright interior with modern finishes, according to STB.

Also, they can travel 20 km autonomously, without connecting to the electrical network.

Thanks to the autonomy of at least 20 km per battery, the trolleybus can continue moving even in case of works or interruptions of the contact network. Comfortable and predictable journeys – exactly what we all want!“, stated STB.
