Huawei Startup Challenge V: we know the semi-final twenty #TechForAgrinnovation

Huawei Startup Challenge is a nationwide initiative addressed to young technology companies that create solutions that respond to real economic and social challenges. For five years, the program has been connecting startups with mentors, experts and business partners, supporting them in the development, testing and scaling of technologies with high implementation potential. This year, the main area of interest are projects from the agritech and modern food production sectors.
The following startups qualified for the semi-finals of the competition: Agrobots sp. z o.o., Agro Contracts sp. z o.o., Bhumi, Biostra, Cropler sp. z o.o., Deepflare, FibriTech sp. z o.o., Hermetia Systems, Intelligent Hives sp. z o.o., Luna Scientific, MXM Sorting sp. z o.o., Nanosci, Nirby, Osmia Future sp. z o.o., Owl Sentry, PeptechLab, PloniQ, Projekt Gizmo, ScanSpectrum, Sniphi Digital Nos.
– This year's edition of the Huawei Startup Challenge confirmed that choosing the agri-food sector as the main theme was the right decision. We recorded a record number of applications, but their level and maturity are even more impressive. Startups very accurately understood the challenges facing agriculture and food production – from climate pressure, through resource efficiency, to food security. What is particularly important is that many of these solutions have real implementation potential and can be quickly adapted in practice. It is clear that Polish innovators not only understand the scale of these challenges, but are ready to actively participate in solving them, says Ryszard Hordyński, Director of Strategy and Communication at Huawei Polska.
The Huawei Startup Challenge V semi-finalists included projects using artificial intelligence, data analytics, sensors and IoT to monitor crops, soil, raw material quality and food storage conditions. Some startups develop solutions based on satellite data, imaging and automation of agronomic decisions, others focus on precise management of fertilization, irrigation and plant protection, as well as early detection of threats affecting yields and production quality.
The semi-finalists also develop technologies in the area of robotics, automation and digitization of processes on farms and in the entire food supply chain – from harvesting, monitoring and sorting of crops, to supply management and reducing post-harvest losses. The qualified projects also include innovations at the intersection of biotechnology, foodtech and the circular economy: solutions supporting pollination, the production of biologically safe agricultural products, the development of hydroponic and aquaponic crops, as well as technologies that transform organic waste into fertilizers, substrates, feed and other value-added products. This shows that this year's semi-final twenty include both digital solutions and advanced technologies with high implementation potential for modern agriculture and food production.
– This year's edition of the Huawei Startup Challenge showed that Polish agritech startups are at a much more advanced stage of development today than a few years ago. In many cases, these are no longer concepts, but technologically refined solutions with real potential for implementation and scaling. This significantly raised the bar in the selection process, and the selection of the semi-final twenty required a very thorough assessment of both technology and the business readiness of the projects. We also see the growing maturity of teams that better understand market needs and are able to translate innovations into specific applications – says Adrian Migoń, CEO of Youth Business Poland.
The next stage of the competition will be a challenge prepared by Huawei, in which the semi-finalists will develop and present solutions that respond to a specific problem identified by the organizer. As a result, ten finalists of the program will be selected. The winners of Huawei Startup Challenge V will receive financial prizes worth a total of PLN 300,000. PLN: 150 thousand PLN for first place, 100 thousand. PLN for the second one and PLN 50,000. PLN for the third one. The winners will be announced during the final gala.
