Ukraine had previously submitted a ceasefire proposal

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky proposed a truce for Easter. Zelensky said on March 30 that Ukraine was ready for a ceasefire over the holidays, but stressed that this would not come at the price of dignity and independence.. The Kremlin was initially skeptical about the idea of a truce, and on Thursday during the day Moscow had not made a final decision on this matter.

On Thursday evening, immediately after the Kremlin's statement, Ukrainian representatives did not comment on this matter.

As recalled by the independent Russian portal Meduza, in April 2025, Putin unilaterally announced a cessation of combat operations for a day and a half during the Easter holidays. At that time, Russia and Ukraine accused each other of numerous ceasefire violations. Nevertheless, the intensity of combat operations decreased significantly during this time.
