Edi Iordănescu, devastated by the disappearance of Mircea Lucescu. “A moment that so many of us wish we didn't live”

Mircea Lucescu took over the Romanian national team from Edi Iordănescu, in the fall of 2024, after an exceptional European Championship. Now, the younger coach was stunned to learn of Lucescu's death and spoke of the living legacy the legendary technician left for many generations.

“I am truly shaken and overwhelmed by a boundless sadness, a day when words feel that they no longer have any meaning… In front of such a large personality and in front of a moment that so many of us would have liked not to experience. Or at least to experience it much, much later…
The Romanian football that we grew up in and that we all love cannot be imagined, as we know it, without Mircea Lucescu. And if from now on, from a day of great sadness, the man is no longer among us, be sure that the player and the coach will always remain present and equally important, whatever happens! Through the model of fighter, visionary, innovator, pedagogue and winner that Mircea Lucescu fixed.
Through the constructive imprint left for generations and generations of footballers, coaches, leaders and supporters. We have learned and still have more to learn from this living legacy. God forgive him and rest him! Condolences to the family…”, said Edi Iordănescu, for ProSport.
Mircea Lucescu and Edi Iordănescu were Romania's last two national team managers, with the legendary coach taking over from his younger colleague after Euro 2024.
