“Cuba also wants to make an agreement, and I think very soon. Either we reach an agreement or we do the right thing“, the resident of the White House told journalists on board Air Force One on Sunday.
“We are in negotiations with Cuba”he stated, emphasizing that “we will deal with Iran before Cuba”.
“I think something will happen to Cuba very soon”, threatened the American head of state, News writes.
Cuba confirmed on Friday that it was negotiating with the United States and freed political prisoners in a deal with the Vatican – a historic mediator between the two ideological foes.
Donald Trump, who multiplies his bellicose statements against Cuba, has been giving assurances since mid-January that negotiations are underway with high-ranking officials.
But Havana has so far denied such contacts.
Washington has been imposing an energy blockade on Cuba since January, citing a “exceptional threat” which this island, located 16 kilometers from the coast of Florida, represents to the American national security.
The American media recently reported on contacts between Marco Rubio and Raul Guillermo Rodriguez Castro, the nephew of former Cuban President Raul Castro. Journalists note that these discussions are more about consultations and the possibility of gradual economic reforms in Cuba, as well as the gradual relaxation of sanctions imposed by the US since the Cold War.
President Trump's remarks indicate a direct and ambitious approach to US foreign policy, targeting pressure on Cuba as his administration finalizes its Middle East goals.
