Folk calendar

Nikonov day

Nikon Pechersky, whose memory is celebrated on this day, lived in the 11th century. He became famous as a scholar-chronicler.

In Rus', it was a day of thorough cleaning – both in the house and in the garden. On this occasion they said: “The house is not big, but it doesn’t tell you to sit down”; “You can’t change housework”; “The owner's house is great.” The diligent owners whitewashed the stoves, shook out the beds, changed the straw in the mattresses, and took out the trash.

They also washed benches, floors and tables in the house – for this they often used an infusion of dried mint. Mint was used when brewing tea, making kvass, and baking gingerbread. In many villages, mint was considered the key to a good sleep – they hung bunches of it in the upper rooms.

They couldn’t do without mint even in the bathhouse, where they went after tidying up. The shelves in the bathhouse were covered with this herb, and its decoction was given to the steam. This was done not only because of the pleasant aroma, but also because of the antiseptic properties of this plant.

Apple trees, rowan trees, black and red currants began to be planted in the gardens on Nikon. They also invited birds – protectors from pests. The birds were treated to crumbs, grains, and flaxseed.

They didn't forget about water. The peasants walked around the springs and springs near the village and said: “Underground water, we are opening the spring paths for you.”
