From Friday, Venice will again be subject to a fee for entering the city on peak tourist days and hours, from Holy Week to the end of July. Visitors who book accommodation are exempt from paying a fee of 5 or 10 euros because they pay tourist tax in hotels and guesthouses.

For the third year in a row, on selected 60 public holidays and weekend days, tourists are required to register their arrival in Venice and pay a fee if they arrive in the city for only a few hours, without staying overnight. The fee is valid from April 3 to July 26, i.e. at the peak of the spring and summer tourist season, and is intended to limit excessive tourism.

According to the authorities, the main reason for crowds in the city are tourists who come in large numbers for short sightseeing and do not stay overnight.

The entrance fee to the city will apply on selected days from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is 5 euros for people who pay at least four days before arrival, and 10 euros for those who pay within four days before their visit.

The authorities of Venice argue that the purpose of the experimental solution, the only one in the world, is to better manage the influx of tourists and appropriate preparation of city public services, including communication.

After this phase, a decision will be made whether this measure is effective and will be introduced permanently.

Payments can be made online at https://cda.ve.it/. There is also a calendar showing the days when the requirement applies. In the period from April 3 to July 26, the fee will apply every week from Friday to Sunday and additionally from April 24 to May 3 and May 29 to June 7.

In the past two years, intensive inspections of tourists have been carried out. The penalty for failure to pay the fee ranges from EUR 50 to EUR 300. (PAP)
