Ilie Bolojan: “No other party appoints the prime minister or the leadership of the PNL”. What does it say about a presidential run in 2030

Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan stated, on Europa FM, that there is no question of resigning from the position of prime minister, adding that those who cause political crises must also assume the consequences. At the same time, Bolojan said that the PNL determines its own party leadership and prime minister.

Asked if he is thinking about resigning from his position at the Victoria Palace, given that the PSD conditions remaining in the coalition on the appointment of another prime minister, Ilie Bolojan answered:

“I do not consider such a hypothesis. I seek to behave responsibly while I have the honor to hold this position, while we are in a problematic situation and certainly, those who generate the crises must assume the consequences of these things and act politically as they see fit.”

What does it say about a presidential run?

The prime minister said that all decisions taken by his cabinet had the prior approval of the coalition and that the Liberals decide on their own the matters that concern them directly.

“The PNL has many disadvantages, as all parties have, but I think there is an instinct for conservation and if it wants the party to remain relevant in the years to come, then it knows that it is not another party that determines the prime minister or the leadership of the party. Otherwise it becomes an annex (…) When decisions are taken from other headquarters, the party becomes irrelevant”, commented the leader of the liberals.

He showed that replacing one cabinet with another will not automatically solve Romania's problems, instead it will create a period of instability in which decisions that the country needs will not be made. For this reason, the option of a minority government is not desirable either.

“I don't think Romania needs a minority government, but Romania also worked with minority governments, but I think it wouldn't be good. It's possible, as we've had in the past years, but I don't think Romania needs such a situation”, declared Ilie Bolojan.

Asked if he is considering a candidacy in the 2030 presidential elections, Bolojan denied.

“As long as we have a president whom I supported in the second round and he wants to run, there is no problem on my part with a candidacy,” the PNL leader also said.
