1 April 20:10

The first Russian patient received a personalized vaccine for the treatment of melanoma, the press service of the Ministry of Health reported.

“At the National Medical Research Center of Radiology <...> For the first time in clinical practice, the personalized antitumor mRNA vaccine “Neoonkovak” was used,” the department said.

The first patient was a 60-year-old resident of the Kursk region. In 2021, he was diagnosed with skin melanoma and underwent surgical treatment. In 2025, the disease affected the lymph nodes, so the man was operated on again at the National Medical Research Center of Radiology.

“The patient is currently undergoing immunotherapy. Despite the treatment, there remains a high risk of further progression and standard options will be extremely limited,” the Ministry of Health added.

In these conditions, the use of a personalized mRNA vaccine is considered as a means of controlling the disease, the ministry explained.

The Neoonkovak vaccine was developed by the Gamaleya Center and is produced by the National Medical Research Center of Radiology. The Ministry of Health issued permission to use the drug in clinical practice in early December.

According to Alexander Ginzburg, preclinical studies on animals have shown that the effectiveness of the vaccine in eliminating the main body of the tumor is 100 percent, and in metastases – 90 percent.

The Ministry of Health is now completing work on including cancer vaccines in the program of state guarantees of free medical care to citizens, said the head of the department, Mikhail Murashko. Very soon, this breakthrough technology will become available to Russians in need of such treatment, he emphasized.
