Folk calendar

Daria Gryaznaya

The holiday was named in honor of two Christian saints – Chrysanthus and Darius of Rome, who lived in the 3rd century.

In Rus' they called Dirty Daria (Daria) because by this day the snow was already actively melting. Spring waters flooded fields, courtyards, roads – and everywhere it became, to put it mildly, not very clean. Mud also appeared around ice holes in the rivers.

However, Daria did not dirty herself for nothing, and only smeared dirt on those people who were heavy with unclean thoughts. Therefore, a bad person was easily identified on this day – by his soiled clothes. There were other signs associated with melting snow. For example, if the spring water flowed noisily, this foreshadowed good grass in the summer. A successful year was also foreshadowed by the manure that melted on the road that day.

It was customary to whitewash canvases for Dirty Daria. The fabric was spread out on the snow under the bright sun, and it became lighter. And the morning frost makes it softer. Experienced weavers advised young ones: “Weave krosna (long thin canvas) when it’s frosty.”

It was also believed that on this day the brownie wakes up. Therefore, he, angry after a long sleep, had to be appeased – treated with bread and milk and cheered up with a small performance. Particularly brave ones tried to deceive the brownie – to do this they told each other lies. And in general it was customary to play pranks on each other. There were various sayings about this. The girls had a special sign: if you prank as many people as possible on this day, then the groom will not deceive you.

There were also signs for the weather. So, they said: what the weather is like on this day, the same is the case on October 1st.
