Strait of Hormuz partially unblocked. Summary of the night

Strait of Hormuz partially unblocked

“Non-hostile” ships will be able to sail through the Strait of Hormuz, reports the Financial Times, citing the government in Tehran. According to the newspaper, in a letter sent to members of the International Maritime Organization, Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Tehran “has taken necessary and proportionate actions to prevent aggressors and their supporters from using the Strait of Hormuz to conduct hostile operations.”

Under normal conditions, the strait passes, among others: approx. 20 percent world supplies of crude oil. As a result of the blockade, the price of the raw material increased sharply on global markets.

The strait is mined

According to US intelligence, Iran has placed floating mines in the Strait of Hormuz, which are anchored just below the water surface. Their Iranian version, known as Mahan 3, is a three-hundred-kilogram payload equipped with acoustic sensors that can detect the presence of a ship from a distance of about 3 m. Since such a mine is activated acoustically, the type of material the hull of the attacked vessel is made of does not matter.

The second type of mine used by the Iranian army detected by the Americans is the 220-kilogram Maham 7 bottom mine, which can be deployed using small cutters or helicopters. The device is intended to attack smaller units, such as landing craft or patrol ships, and can be deployed in waters at a depth of 3 to 91 meters.

Authorities in Riyadh recently allowed US forces to use King Fahd Air Base in the western part of the country. Before the war began, Saudi Arabia stipulated that the US would not be able to use its territory to attack Iran.
