The year 2026 is “crucial” for Romanians' electronic bulletin and digital wallet, says Nicușor Dan. What he discussed with Oana Gheorghiu

President Nicușor Dan declared, on Sunday, that he discussed with Deputy Prime Minister Oana Gheorghiu about the digitalization of the Romanian state and the reform of state companies, during a meeting this week in Brussels.

The head of state said he and the deputy prime minister “agreed that this year is crucial for the completion of the e-ID card ecosystem and digital wallets.”

“Romanian citizens, including those from the diaspora, have the right to modern, digitized and quality public services. They must be able to identify themselves and be able to sign documents from a distance, and most public services should be simple and accessible, without going to the counter,” said Nicușor Dan, on Sunday, in a post on Facebook.

The problem reported by the Romanians with the electronic bulletin

Citizens with electronic ballots have complained, on the “Paperless” platform recently launched by the Government, that they have problems with changing their home address, which no longer appears on the card, but is stored on the chip.

Upon HotNews.ro's request to provide explanations, the General Directorate of Persons Records (DGEP), within the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI), admitted that currently the address on the electronic storage medium (chip) can only be rewritten at the headquarters of the institution in Bucharest.

The directorate attributed the situation to the complexity of the project, stating that issuing a new bulletin takes five times less than rewriting the address.

Almost 1.4 million Romanians have made their electronic bulletin so far. It can be obtained free of charge, on first request, by anyone who is at least 14 years old or who will turn 14 in the next 30 days.

Until June 30, 2026, the Romanian state bears the cost of the Electronic Identity Card (CEI) from the European funds allocated through the PNRR.

Nicușor Dan and Oana Gheorghiu also spoke about the reform of state companies

In Sunday's post, the president said that he and the deputy prime minister also talked about the “reform of state companies”, which Nicușor Dan described as “indispensable”.

“It cannot be postponed any longer. A strong state needs strong companies”, concluded President Nicușor Dan.
