A Romanian woman and an Iranian man tried to enter a British nuclear base where there are Trident submarines

An Iranian man and a Romanian woman were arrested on Thursday after trying to break into the Faslane naval base in Scotland. The two are accused of trying to break into the nuclear submarine facility and will appear before Dumbarton Magistrates' Court on Monday, according to the BBC and Sky News.

Police Scotland confirmed the man (34) and woman (31) were detained at the gate of HM Naval Base Clyde, near Helensburgh. They tried to break into the premises on Thursday at around 5pm. The information was made public only on Saturday by the international press.

The Faslane base, located on Gare Loch, approximately 40km from Glasgow, is a vital strategic point. It is home to the Royal Navy's four Vanguard class nuclear submarines, the only launch platforms for Trident nuclear missiles.

The two are due to appear at Dumbarton Crown Court in Scotland on Monday, police said in a statement.

Michael Clarke, Sky News' defense and security expert, highlighted the importance of the location, stating that Faslane is “the largest military base in Scotland”, with a staff of around 7,000, both military and civilian.

In this case, the British authorities opened an investigation to establish the reasons for the attempt to penetrate the security area of the base.
