88% of Russian films that received state support in 2025 failed miserably at the box office. Only 5 and 41 films for the creation of which funds were allocated from the budget turned out to be commercially successful. The research center of the communication group PROGRESS came to these conclusions after analyzing data from the Cinema Fund, the Ministry of Culture, UAIS and the Kinopoisk service.

The results of the study are published by Gazeta.ru. According to media reports, the most profitable film among state-supported projects was “The Wizard of the Emerald City. Yellow Brick Road” – the film earned about 1.39 billion rubles over the production budget, becoming the leader of the year in terms of commercial results.

In second place was the film “Daddy's Daughters. Mom is back,” which brought in more than 515 million rubles in profit, and the third position was taken by “Finist. The First Bogatyr” – its box office receipts exceeded the budget by approximately 341 million rubles.

The film “The Prophet” also paid off. The Story of Alexander Pushkin,” however, its financial result turned out to be much more modest – about 37 million rubles in excess of costs.

The biggest financial failure was the film “Evil City” – it was more than 1.86 billion rubles short of breakeven. Five more films with state support showed losses of more than 1 billion rubles, including the film “Kraken”, for the creation of which about 760 million rubles were allocated from the budget.

For comparison, in 2024, out of 23 films with state support, 18 projects did not pay off—about 78%.

Let us recall that after the start of the special military operation, most major international film companies left the Russian market. At the same time, foreign films continued to be shown in cinemas, including as part of the so-called pre-show service, when formally a ticket is sold for a short film, but along with it they show a blockbuster that is in demand among viewers.

In order to increase the box office of Russian films, the largest cinema chains in the Russian Federation have for several years in a row refused to show foreign films during the New Year holidays.
