Irina Begu (34 years old) and Yanina Wickmayer (35) were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Double Competition at Roland Garros. The Romanian-Belgian pair was defeated with 6-4, 6-3 by the Ulrikke Eikeri team (32 years old, Norway)/Eri Hozumi (31 years old, Japan).

After being forced by an injury to withdraw in the first round of the simple competition at Roland Garros, Irina Begu had a solid course in the double competition, where she team with Yanina Wickmayer, another veteran of the WTA circuit.

Irina Begu and Yanina Wickmayer, defeated after two spectacular sets

The two players won 3 victories in 3 sets and qualified in the quarterfinals in Paris, where they had Ulrikke Eikeri and Eri Hozumi. The match, which was interrupted several times, was controlled by the Norwegian-Japanese pair.

The first set lasted an hour and 6 minutes, thanks to extremely long games in which many decisive balls were saved. It started with two breaks and, later, at the score of 3-3, two other breaks followed, which accentuated the balance between the two teams.

Finally, Eikeri and Hozumi took advantage of the second set ball and took over: 6-4. With an extra moral, the two players started excellent and the second set and, at one point, were driving with 3-0.

Begu and Wickmayer returned impressive and, after a series of games won, equalized at 3. There followed three other games adjudicated by Ulrikke Eikeri and Eri Hozumi, who won 6-4, 6-3 and qualified in the Roland Garros semifinals.

What does the semifinals of the Double Competition at Roland Garros look like

For the performance of reaching the quarterfinals of the second Grand Slam tournament of the year, Begu and Wickmayer won a prize of 80,000 euros and 430 points.

In the penultimate act of double competition, Eikeri and Hozumi will take place with Anna Danilina (29 years old, Kazakhstan) and Aleksandra Krunic (32, Serbia).

In the other semifinal, the Russians Mirra Andreeva (18 years old) and Diana Shnaider (21 years old) meet the Italians Sara Errani (38 years old) and Jasmine Paolini (29).
