“Trump is forgetting one thing.” Băsescu criticizes the American president after the statements about NATO

Former president Traian Băsescu criticized the leader of the United States, Donald Trump, saying that he asked for the support of European allies in the Middle East even though “the big states of Europe, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, were not consulted when this war started”. He also noted that it was Romania that intervened to support Washington in its conflicts over the past three decades, not the other way around.

On Tuesday, in an intervention on B1 TV, Traian Băsescu commented on the statements of the American president, who complained about the lack of support from European states in the Middle East, even though before the start of the war “he did not consider it necessary to collaborate with these countries”.

“I think that Mr. Trump is forgetting one more thing. He claims to have defended us for I don't know how many years – it didn't seem to me that Romania was defended by the United States under any circumstances since the Revolution took place. On the contrary, since the Revolution, since '90, let's say, Romania has helped the United States, and in Afghanistan, and in Iraq, and in the Balkans. So for now, Romania has not called on the support of the United States to be On the contrary, those who asked for support were the Americans and Romania,” Traian Băsescu emphasized.

He said Trump was “making confusion” about “how much America spends on defense compared to us.”

“Well, it's not about spending equally, because we don't have equal advantages. The United States wants to dominate the world and then they need major military investments. We didn't set out to dominate the world, we didn't set out to have 11 nuclear aircraft carriers, we didn't set out to be a dominant power on the globe. We set out to be good partners, good allies, which we have and have demonstrated now,” explained the former president of Romania.

Traian Băsescu, about the Romanian Army: “Insufficiently equipped for a war situation”

The former president spoke about the endowment of the Romanian Army and drew attention that “we must be the first to guarantee our defense”.

“We must be the first to guarantee our defense (…). The army is relatively well-equipped recently, it will continue to be equipped, but it is clear that it is insufficiently equipped for a war situation, but that's it, here we are, that's all we could do”, Băsescu added.

He said he had “a concern about our nonchalance”, saying that “we delude ourselves with this certainty that nothing is happening to us, that we are not involved in the war”.

“All the speeches of our politicians are “don't worry”, “everything is fine”, “we are not in danger”, “nothing can happen to us”, and I say it very openly, a lot can happen to us (…). We know the situation in the Persian Gulf, but Russian drones are buzzing a few kilometers away, also on the border with Ukraine, so Romania is in a difficult situation, and the population must be made aware, they must know that peace is not a guarantee”, the former head of the stable also declared.
