Flash floods kill more than 20 people in Kenya and paralyze airport operations – Reuters


The agency noted that the disaster covered the city on the night of March 7. Floodwaters inundated residential areas and roads. Aid workers collected the bodies of the dead, while local residents and drivers used vehicles to evacuate people to higher ground.

A Reuters reporter saw three bodies pulled out from under cars that had been washed away by the weather. Some were electrocuted by damaged power lines.

National electricity supplier Kenya Power said separately that water damaged equipment at substations in 14 districts. Kenya Airways announced the cancellation and rerouting of flights from Nairobi to the coastal city of Mombas.

Kenyan President William Ruto said he had deployed the military and emergency services to coordinate the rescue and ordered the release of food aid from government reserves to affected families.
