Timofey Vesnovey
The day is named after St. Timothy, who lived in the desert in Asia Minor in the 8th century. Even in his youth, he made it a rule to never look at a woman’s face – and all his life he was faithful to his vow. Timothy had the gift of healing and could cast out evil spirits.
On this day, warm winds began to blow, so the people said: “If only I could live until Vesnovey, winter is not terrible there”; “Timofey Vesnovey – it’s already warm at the door”; “No matter how angry the blizzard is at Timofey Vesnovey, spring still blows.”
There was also a saying: “The spring blows and warms the old.” On this day, the old people got off the stove, moved to the rubble and looked at the weather outside. If the day turned out to be fine, the whole spring should have been the same. We also heard thunder. If the first rumbles are heard with a north wind – it means a cold spring, with an east wind – warm and dry, with a south wind – just warm.
It was believed that on the day of Timothy Vesnovey, sap flow begins in maples and birches.
