According to The Guardian, the Azerbaijani Foreign Minister stated that the drone hit the terminal building of an airport in Nakhchivan, located on the border with Iran. Part of the building was damaged and two civilians were injured.
A second drone fell near a school in a nearby village. Baku said it reserves the right to take retaliatory measures.
Azerbaijan, an oil-rich authoritarian state that has taken a neutral position in the Middle East conflict, has recently developed relations with Israel and the administration of President Donald Trump, gradually distancing itself from Moscow.
The country is not home to US military bases, suggesting Iran could expand strikes beyond targets directly linked to US forces.
Baku's increasingly close military cooperation with Israel has caused tensions with Tehran, although the two neighboring states have maintained largely pragmatic relations.
Both countries are predominantly Shia Muslim, and Iran is home to millions of ethnic Azeris – estimates range from around 15 million to more than 20 million – many living in the northwestern provinces bordering Azerbaijan.
On Wednesday, NATO shot down an Iranian ballistic missile headed for Turkish airspace.
A US military official told The Insider's Michael Weiss that the Iranian missile was shot down by a US Navy ship with a Standard Missile 3 interceptor.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the Iranian drone heading towards Turkey would have targeted the Incirlik Air Base. The information shows that the missile flew over Iraq and Syria before entering Turkish airspace, according to a statement from the Ministry of Defense in Ankara. The remains of the missile fell in the province of Hatay, on the border with Syria.
