Who is Darryl Nirenberg, the new US ambassador to Bucharest: “Our relationship with Romania has never been more important”

With a four-decade career in foreign policy and international trade law, Darryl Nirenberg officially assumes the position of US Ambassador to Romania. His appointment comes at a particularly important moment for bilateral relations, Romania being a key NATO ally on the eastern flank.

Darryl Nirenberg, officially begins his mandate by presenting the credentials to President Nicușor Dan, today, after 2:00 p.m., at Palatul Cotroceni.
The US diplomat was sworn in at the end of February 2026, after being nominated by President Donald Trump in May 2025 and confirmed by the US Senate in December 2025.
“Our relationship with Romania has never been more important”
At the November 19 hearing in the Foreign Relations Committee of the US Senate, Nirenberg emphasized the strategic importance of Romania for the United States.
“Romania is a key NATO ally, strategically located on the Black Sea and bordering Ukraine. It offers great opportunities for American companies and has the potential to be a decisive factor in energy resources. Our relationship with Romania has never been more important“, said Darryl Nirenberg, according to Agerpres.
In a message sent to Bucharest, the Embassy of the United States of America in Romania announced that, in the coming period, the focus will be on strengthening bilateral cooperation.
“We will focus on strengthening defense cooperation to keep America safe, strengthening our strategic alliances, and fostering prosperity by expanding collaboration on trade, investment and energy“, the communication states.
Over 40 years of experience in foreign policy
With more than four decades of experience in foreign policy and international trade law, Darryl Nirenberg is a partner at the Washington law firm Steptoe LLP, where he specialized in relations with Congress, federal agencies, and the White House.
He began his career as a legislative assistant to Senator SI Hayakawa and later served on the Senate Agriculture Committee. He was then part of the staff of the Committee on Foreign Relations, during a period marked by the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Revolution in Romania, holding the positions of professional staff member, minority advisor and deputy director of the minority staff, according to the presentation on the website of the US State Department.
His tenure on Capitol Hill ended as Chief of Staff and Legislative Director to Senator Jesse Helms, including his time chairing the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
After 14 years in the Senate, Nirenberg entered the private sector, working at Patton Boggs LLP, where he became a partner, and later joined Steptoe LLP, where he still practices today.
Darryl Nirenberg graduated with honors from Colgate University and earned his J.D. from George Washington University Law School, taking night classes while serving in the Senate and self-financing his education.
He has also been involved in youth sports for over two decades, coaching baseball and football teams and serving on the boards of Arlington Little League, the Northern Virginia Ice Dogs and the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Positive Coaching Alliance.
