A study from the University of Bonn showed that if you eat almost nothing but oatmeal for two days, you can quickly reduce the level of “bad” cholesterol. The results were published in the journal Nature Communications (18+).
The experiment involved people with metabolic syndrome, who have excess weight, high blood pressure and sugar, and problems with fat metabolism. Volunteers from the main group ate 300 grams of oatmeal per day, sometimes adding some vegetables or fruits. The control group also reduced their caloric intake, but without oats.
The results of the study are startling: after two days, those who ate the oatmeal saw their LDL cholesterol drop by about 10%. On average, participants also lost 2kg and their blood pressure dropped slightly.
Scientists noted that the effect was noticeable even six weeks after the experiment. They explained this by the fact that oats affect the composition of intestinal bacteria: some of them process oat fiber and secrete substances useful for cholesterol metabolism.
It also turns out that certain bacteria help remove excess histidine, an amino acid that, in excess, can impair insulin sensitivity.
In turn, EAOMedia reminds that oatmeal is good not only for health, but also for beauty: it acts as a mild detoxifier and helps cleanse the body, and it also makes excellent masks and facial peels that refresh and improve the skin.
