PSD leaders meet on Monday at the party's headquarters, just before the meeting of the representatives of the coalition parties. It is expected that the social democrats will discuss the budget for 2026, but also the internal consultation regarding PSD's participation in the government.
From 10:00, the PSD leadership will meet at the party headquarters in Kiseleff Road for a meeting of the National Permanent Bureau, which includes the president Sorin Grindeanu, the 5 first vice-presidents, the 20 vice-presidents, the general secretary of the party, Claudiu Manda and the president of the PSD national council, Mihai Tudose.
According to HotNews information, the leaders did not receive a list of topics to be discussed. However, it is expected that the Budget – the main subject under debate in the coalition – and the internal referendum will be on the agenda.
The results of the party consultation, still awaited
The PSD chiefs' meeting takes place in the context in which, in December, Sorin Grindeanu announced that he would consult PSD members to decide whether or not the party would remain in the coalition. This consultation would be ready after the completion of the national budget.

In an interview given to G4Media last week, Sorin Grindeanu said that he is considering expanding the survey:
“A YES/NO question – considering all these aspects related to the budget, (…), if it is going to be YES, if we keep this coalition in this form, i.e. together PSD, PNL, UDMR, USR or in a more restricted form, without USR, for example. And if we go ahead with Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, because the protocol can remain very simple PSD, PNL, UDMR and with another prime minister given by PNL”, he explained Grindeanu for G4Media.
At the beginning of the national forum of PES activists in Romania that took place on Saturday, MEP Victor Negrescu, the coordinator of PES activists in Romania and first vice-president of the PSD, asked the members and sympathizers present at the event if they wanted another government formula, which would still remain pro-European.
Everyone in the room shouted yes. “Mr. President, the first consultation has been carried out”, Negrescu told Grindeanu from the stage, after the reaction of the room.

PSD conditions the adoption of the budget
The head of the PSD has stated several times that if the proposals of the social democrats are not found in the budget, they will not vote for the project when it reaches the Parliament.
“If you want and wish to have the PSD as partners, you must also include the left-wing visions represented by the Social-Democratic Party in this budget,” Grindeanu said on Saturday.
“The following things must be found in the budget for 2026: money for national investments, highways, hospitals. Money for local investments carried out through the Ministry of Development, the solidarity package, and no administrative-territorial unit should receive less money than last year. All taxes collected locally, should remain local,” explained the leader of the social democrats.
The solidarity package that Grindeanu refers to was announced following a party meeting on February 1. It is about a package of financial aid “in two equal installments, April and December, for 2.8 million people”:
- 1,000 lei for 1.24 million pensioners with incomes below 1,500 lei;
- 800 lei for 497 thousand pensioners with incomes between 1,501-2,000 lei;
- 600 lei for 612 thousand pensioners with incomes between 2,001-3,000 lei.
PSD sources explained to HotNews that the Social Democrats are not willing to give up any of these demands.
