All members of the UN Security Council, except for the United States, said on Wednesday that Gaza Hunger is a “human crisis” and warned that the use of starvation as a war weapon is prohibited by international humanitarian law, Reuters reports.

In a common statement, the 14 members of the Council requested an immediate, unconditional and permanent armistice, the release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups, significant intensification of humanitarian aid throughout the Gaza strip and that Israel would immediately and unconditionally raise all the restrictions on the delivery of aid.

“The hunger in Gaza must be stopped immediately,” the members of the Council said. “Time is essential. The humanitarian emergency situation must be approached without delay, and Israel must change its form.”

The city of Gaza and neighboring areas are officially facing hunger, which risk expanding, set an international hunger monitoring on Friday. According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) system, about 514,000 people, almost a quarter of the Palestinian population in Gaza, suffer from hunger, which could reach 641,000 until the end of September.

Israel asked the withdrawal of this evaluation on Wednesday, rejecting the conclusions as false and biased. The Israeli authorities claimed that the IPC analysis was based on incomplete data, largely provided by Hamas, and did not take into account a recent influx in the region.

At the UN Security Council meeting, on Wednesday, the US interim ambassador Dorothy Shea on Wednesday, put the credibility and integrity of the CPI report, saying that “neither one or another is passed.”

“We all recognize that hunger is a real problem in Gaza and that there are major humanitarian needs that need to be covered. The approach of these needs is a priority for the United States,” she said before the council made up of 15 members.
