Day of Fyodor Tiron and Mariamne Kikimora

On this day, two saints were commemorated – the righteous old woman Mariamne and the great martyr Theodore Tiron. Thanks to his nickname, Saint Theodore in Rus' turned into a “tyrant” in the minds of the people, who, according to legend, came to his senses in time and began to protect people. They prayed to him that stolen things and lost people would be found.

However, stolen goods were also searched for using special rituals. For example, when they wanted to find out the name of a thief, they took a sieve and stuck scissors into it, and inserted the index fingers into their rings. This structure was held suspended while the names of the suspects were pronounced. If the sieve suddenly turned, it indicated a thief.

How the righteous Mariamne turned into a kikimora in people's minds is not at all clear. She was depicted as a small old woman and was considered the wife of a brownie or a goblin. On the other hand, it was to Saint Mariamne that people turned with a request to protect them from the tricks of the kikimora. According to the peasants, she did the most harm to spinners and weavers – she tangled the yarn and unraveled the balls.

On the day of Mariamne, women uttered conspiracies against kikimora at dawn. For maximum effect, the ritual should be repeated after two weeks.

Mariamnin's day, which ends the winter wedding weeks, was considered suitable for fortune telling. The girls went out into the street and looked: if a woman is walking, it means that the one who tells fortunes will get married this year. But it was extremely undesirable to look into the sky: if you see a falling star that evening, it will mean a serious illness or even death.

They remarked to Fyodor and Mariamne: what the weather is like that day, the same it will be in the summer. A bright month in the evening promised a good harvest in general, and rain – an abundance of bread and flax.
