According to Article 111 of the Iranian constitution, the death or incapacity of the supreme leader results in creation of an interim leadership councilwhose task is to manage state affairs until a new leader is appointed.

“The Americans have stabbed a knife into the heart of the Iranian nation, and we will stab a knife into theirs,” said Ali Larijani, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. His words are quoted by CNN.

He announced further retaliatory actions against the United States and Israel, saying that “the response of our armed forces will be much stronger.” “They need to know they can't just hit and run,” he said.

Larijani is one of Iran's most important decision-makers and was a key advisor to Khamenei. He said an interim leadership structure would soon be established, which would include the president and the head of the judiciary.

Larijani said that Iran assured the region's leaders that it does not intend to fight them but will continue to attack American bases in Middle Eastern countries. “It must be made clear once and for all that Americans cannot abuse the Iranian people,” he stressed.

The Assembly of Experts, the clerical body responsible for selecting the supreme leader, has start consultations to select a successor as soon as possiblein accordance with constitutional procedures.

According to a recent New York Times report, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has taken pre-emptive steps to prepare for the possibility of his death in the face of growing threats from Israel and the United States.

The report seemed to deny that he expanded the powers of his close ally Ali Larijani and effectively gave him key responsibilities at the height of anti-government protests in January.
