A tram derailed and hit a building in northern Italy on Friday, killing two people and injuring 38 others, Italian authorities said.

The Italian police announce that the toll of the tram accident is two dead and 38 injured, AFP cites.

One of the victims was hit by the tram when it derailed, and the second was a passenger, the mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, told journalists present at the scene.

The tram, one of the newest models in circulation in Milan, derailed on Via Vittorio Veneto, one of the main thoroughfares in the city center, crashing into a shop window, local fire department spokesman Vittorio Di Giacomo told Reuters.

Milan's local transport company, Azienda Trasporti Milanesi (ATM), said in a statement that it was “deeply shocked” by the event, expressed solidarity with all those affected and said it was working with judicial authorities to try to understand what caused the accident.

Contacted by HotNews, representatives of the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs inform that so far no requests for consular assistance have been received from Romanian citizens in connection with this tram accident in Milan.

“No requests for consular assistance have been received, it is an ongoing investigation and we are in contact with the competent authorities”, stated the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andrei Țărnea, for HotNews.

The circumstances under which the tram derailed are not yet known.

Local emergency services announced that 13 ambulances responded to the scene.

Civil protection teams also set up a tent to assist the injured, according to a Reuters eyewitness.

Law enforcement blocked the entire area at the scene of the accident, preventing the crowd from approaching, writes AFP.

The tram was visible in the middle of the intersection, in a neighborhood of the city located right near the historic center.

What the witnesses say

“I heard a loud bang,” Anna, a 27-year-old woman who was in her office nearby at the time of the accident, told AFP.

“I saw that part of the tram crashed into a shop,” added the young woman.

“I thought it was an earthquake,” said one of the tram passengers for the Italian agency ANSA.

“I was seated and I woke up on the floor, along with the other passengers. It was terrible,” he added.
