On February 23, 2026, Lent began, and therefore believers change their diet to a simpler and lighter one. But not everyone knows exactly what can and cannot be consumed during fasting. Nutritionist-endocrinologist Myra Rau told what foods those who are fasting should include in their menu.
The expert urges to give preference to products that contain vegetable protein.
“These products include: beans, lentils, peas, chickpeas, mung beans, soy products. Add these products to cereals, potatoes and pasta. And don’t forget about vegetables in your main meals,” says Rau in an interview with RIA Novosti (18+).
You cannot ignore the days when fish is allowed – it is a high-quality source of protein and iron. Mushrooms are also allowed during fasting. According to the expert, they are part of a healthy diet and contain chitin, which is similar in effect to fiber. But, contrary to popular belief, there is very little protein there – only 3-5 g per 100 g of product.
The specialist also noted that plant foods are digested faster than animal foods, and therefore a person will experience hunger faster. Therefore, you need to plan a few snacks between meals. Fruits and nuts are great for snacking.
