Russia's first attack of this type. Ukrainians have a big problem

Kharkov is located only a few dozen kilometers from the border with Russia, which means that the city is regularly the target of night Russian attacks using kamikaze drones, ballistic and cruise missiles. In the recent attack on February 26, 2026 alone, there was confirmed use of 18 Shahed drones flying over and towards the city and two ballistic missiles that fell on civilian areas.

What attack methods do the Russians use in Kharkov?

Were there any casualties as a result of the attack on February 26, 2026?

However, it seems that Kharkiv's residents may soon face even greater challenges. As revealed by the Ukrainian prosecutor, a Russian kamikaze drone controlled by optical fiber was discovered for the first time in the city. This time, no one was hurt, the drone ended its flight in a tree, but the very fact of its appearance in the city indicates that the Russians are looking for new methods of attacking this metropolis.

An extremely dangerous drone

Drones controlled by optical fiber are so dangerous that: they cannot be jammed with electronic warfare systemsas such a drone is connected to the operator via optical fiber and does not emit a radio signal. This also means that it cannot be detected by radar, which is difficult anyway, because we are talking about a small and low-flying object. Therefore, a drone of this type must be eliminated in a physical way, e.g. by shooting it down.

The Ukrainian authorities add that the presence of this type of facilities in Kharkov will pose a significant technological challenge for them and time will tell whether more such dangerous devices will appear over the city or whether this was just an isolated incident.
