The company that created ChatGPT has announced that it is developing its largest R&D hub outside the US in London. The company has its European headquarters in Dublin and a small presence in London, but things will change.
The UK is home to one of OpenAI's biggest rival companies, Google's DeepMind division, with 2,000 employees.
Britain wants to be seen as a superpower in the field of AI and cutting-edge research, at a time when governments are racing to attract investment from AI giants that want to expand, notes Reuters.
Mark Chen, director of research at OpenAI, explained that the UK was chosen for its wealth of talent, but also because there are many top universities and globally respected scientific institutions.
UK technology minister Liz Kendall described OpenAI's expansion to London as “a huge vote of confidence”.
The company has only 30 employees at its London hub and has not said how many more it will employ after the expansion.
Employees in London are working on projects such as the AI-based programming assistant, called Codex, but also on the large-scale language model (LLM) GPT-5.2, writes Tech.eu.
The company, whose European headquarters is in Ireland, opened its first office in London in 2023.
