The number of prosumers continues to grow in Romania and reached almost 300,000 at the end of last year. The novelty is that more and more prosumers are installing storage batteries, in order to consume the energy produced by the panels inside the household, said Gabriel Andronache, vice president of the National Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE), on Monday.

“The latest data shows that, as of December 31, 2025, the number of prosumers has reached 294,000, with an installed capacity of 3,400 MW.

We have seen that since last year, prosumers have started to install storage capabilities. Being very many, prosumers can also create a lot of imbalances, but fortunately, the number of those installing storage batteries is also increasing, around 10,000 prosumers per month are installing storage capacities,” Andronache said at the ZF Power Summit conference.

ANRE: Half of prosumers will have storage batteries by the end of this year

At the end of last year, of the total number of prosumers, 66,000 had storage batteries, he added.

“This year, for sure, at least 70,000 more prosumers will install batteries. We hope that at the end of this year we will reach 180,000 prosumers that also have storage capacity, which means that half of the prosumers will also have batteries,” said the ANRE official.

At the end of 2025, there are storage capacities of almost 600 MW that can be distributed throughout the national energy system, and, according to ANRE's estimates, another 600 MW are in storage in the batteries of the prosumers.

“Based on the establishment permits we have issued, we expect to exceed 2,000 MW in dispatchable storage capacity (large – no) by the end of this year,” Andronache added.

The auction for new connection permits will take place in September

Regarding the issue of projects approved on paper, which block the energy system, according to Prime Minister Bolojan, Gabriel Andronache stated:

“Indeed, there are a lot of ATRs (connection authorizations – no) and I have faced this problem since I arrived at ANRE (in 2023 – no) and I could see that it was not implemented even when I was before, at Transelectrica. From 2024, authorizations are given on the basis of an auction,” he said.

For this year, the auction will take place in September.

A week ago, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said that there are serious companies that want to invest in electricity production, but they are blocked by “speculative investments, of the smart guys type”.

According to the Prime Minister, these “smart guys” obtain documentation and technical approvals for connection for investments that they do not intend to make, but only to sell.
