The huge containerist Marie Maersk, on board, which a fire broke out on Wednesday, changed the course and heads towards the nearest port – Liberian Freeport in Monrovia.

The ship sailing under the Danish flag set off on 4 August from Rotterdam in the Netherlands and headed for Tanjung Pelepas in Malaysia, where he was to arrive around September 6. Due to the threats of Yemeni fighters of Huti, who warned a few days of the world's largest shipowners, that they would attack their ships in retaliation for cooperation with Israel, Marie Maersk gave up the route through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea, choosing a longer path around Africa.
When it affected the crowded trail crossing the Guinea bay, the crew saw smoke coming out of the containers. Two tugs with firefighting equipment flowed towards the ship.
– On Thursday, a containerist, which was still on the high seas, at a speed of 1.3 knots, i.e. less than 2.5 km per hour, sailed towards the nearest port, Liberian Monrovia, from which at the time of the fire he was divided by over 250 nautical miles, i.e. about 460 km – the management of the Liberian port informed PAP, emphasizing that the crew is safe, All engines and systems operate on the ship, and the fire is under control.
Maersk in a statement issued on Thursday announced that it maintains strict communication with the ship. “We remain in constant contact with the crew and provide all possible support. We cannot yet confirm the scale of the fire and its impact on the load,” the Danish company wrote, emphasizing that no explosions have been reported on the containerist.

Built in 2013, Marie Maersk is one of the largest containers belonging to Gemini Cooperation, a shipping corporation created in 2025 by Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, whose main goal is punctuality of delivering ordered goods. Marie Maersk will probably be the first container of the group that will not meet the task set by the shipowner.
