Maia was adopted by a single woman, 46 years old: “At first, she didn't want to go to school anymore, so that the children wouldn't laugh at her for having another mother”

More than 6,000 children in Romania are waiting for someone to offer them a place called “home”. Many of the adoptable children are already in school, but their need for loving parents is as great as that of the little ones, preferred by most of those who want to adopt. All About Moms presents a series of touching stories from families who have adopted in recent years, showing the challenges and joys of adoption.
“I studied, I worked to build a career, and there came a day when I asked myself: For whom? … And then, my decision came naturally. Being single, I decided that it would be best to adopt a child and give it everything I have and everything I can.” – This is how the emotional story of Adriana and Maia can be summed up in a few words, who became a family three years ago, when the girl was 7 and a half years old, and Adriana was 46 years old.
Adriana Vasilescu's decision to adopt was a well-considered and assumed one. She was not frightened by the thought that it would be difficult for her to be a single mother, nor that she would raise a child with a past that she would not know very well. She started on this road with all her courage, alone. She told her family about her plan only after the decision had been made, and close friends found out later. But some and others supported her and were by her side at every step she took in this journey of adoption.
“You feel like it's your baby from the moment you see his picture”
Adriana knew from the beginning, ever since the idea of adoption sprouted in her mind, that she would bring home a little girl. “I knew it would be a girl, but I always thought it would be smaller. That's why I think that list you go through (the list of adoptable children – ed.) is very important. In front of that list, you feel. You feel that it's your child when you see it. I for one, when I saw the photo of Maia, I actually knew that she was my little girl. That little girl, thin, with clear eyes and a smile that lit up her whole that face, that child who exuded joy – she was my little girl”, says Adriana.
When they stood face to face for the first time, it was not easy at all. It wasn't like in the movies or like in dreams, with little arms wrapped around your neck, with tears and smiles mixed together. The little girl's reaction was not what Adriana had hoped for. The foster nurse in her care had the imprudence to tell the little girl the reason why she was “going to meet a lady”.
“Maia was old enough to understand everything that was happening. At first, she didn't want to meet me. But with the help of the ladies from DGASPC Sector 4, with small but sure steps, everything went well.” And for the mother it was just as hard, because the emotions were overwhelming. “I had a lot of thoughts and anxieties. I wondered if she would accept me. If we would get along with each other. And I also had a great fear of doing something wrong with her,” Adriana remembers.
Living it “for the first time”
Adriana obtained the certificate of adoptive person in May 2021, and at the beginning of November 2022 she met Maia. A month later, in December, Maia came to her future mother's house for the first time, to spend Christmas with her and her grandmother. The first real Christmas in the family, lit by love and the promise that everything will be like this from then on.
For Maia, life with her mother, Adriana, was made up of many firsts: the first Christmas and the first Easter together, the first scooter bought, the first roller skates, the first day of school accompanied by her mother, the first plane trip to relatives in Spain, eager to meet her. Accommodating each other was easy, their relationship formed and developed naturally, and at the moment Adriana considers that they are already a well-knit family.
