The Polish authorities are investigating an allegedly planned attack by Russia, after explosives hidden in canned corn were introduced in Poland by a Ukrainian citizen with links to Russia's military intelligence (GRU), according to the Polish press, quoted by Euronews.

The information about the alleged plot of the Russians was published on Thursday by the largest Polish newspaper, Gazeta Wyborcza, which cited sources within the National Prosecutor's Office and the Internal Security Agency (ABW).

An Ukrainian suspect with links to Russia's military intelligence (GRU), identified only as Władysław D., would have transported explosives in Poland after digging them from a cemetery in neighboring Lithuania. The suspect would have left the boxes near the city of łódź, in the center of Poland, reports Gazeta Wyborcza.

The quantity of explosives discovered could have caused the destruction of a car and serious injury to the nearby persons, according to a military expert quoted by the Polish publication.

The coordinator of the special services in Poland, Tomasz Siemoniak, said that Gru was planning sabotage operations not only in Poland, but also in Lithuania and Germany, using explosives hidden in canned. According to investigators, GRU intended to attach the explosive loads of drones for attacks.

Although the prosecutors did not specify the direct motivation of the plot, the Polish press notes that the firm support of Warsaw for Ukraine from the beginning of the Russian invasion in 2022 could be a factor.

The total support that Poland granted to Kiev is up to about 3.3 billion euros, notes Euronews.com. In addition, Poland houses about one million Ukrainian refugees, most women and children, writes the same source.

Hybrid attacks in Europe are investigated

The Polish National Prosecutor's Office told TVP World, an international news channel operated on by Polish television, that the investigation is part of a wider investigation on Russian hybrid war operations in Europe.

The discovery of explosive boxes occurs against the background of a recent series of air space violations in Europe, for which Russia is considered responsible.

Munich airport, Germany, was forced to suspend operations on Thursday night after “several drones” were reported, which led to the cancellation of 17 flights.

In recent weeks, airports in Denmark, Norway and Poland have also suspended flights due to unidentified drone activity.

These violations of the air space have fueled the debates between European leaders in the feasibility of building a so-called “anti-drone wall” to protect the east flank of the continent.

Moscow rejected the accusations that they would be responsible for any of the air space violations, qualifying them as “unfounded accusations”.
