A 31-year-old man, accused of stealing, last month, a mobile phone from a person on a street in the Capital, was detained by the Bucharest police.
The Capital Police announced on Tuesday that the man was charged with aggravated robbery, after he was found by law enforcement a day ago and taken for questioning.
The incident took place about a month ago on a street in Sector 5 of the Capital and the victim is a 28-year-old Nepalese citizen, judicial sources told HotNews.
“In fact, on January 20, 2026, the 19th Police Department was notified by a 28-year-old man, a foreign citizen, regarding the fact that, while he was at an address in District 5, he had been violently dispossessed of his mobile phone. The research and investigations carried out led to a 31-year-old man, known with concerns of the nature criminal, suspected of committing the act”, the police said.
The police representatives stated that the mobile phone was found on the man, which he allegedly stole from the Nepalese.
The two, who did not know each other, were in front of a game room when the suspect asked the victim for his phone, later refusing to return it, according to HotNews sources.
When the victim asked for the phone back, the man suspected of robbery pushed him, put him on the ground and hit him several times. A surveillance camera in the area captured the moment the Nepalese was attacked.
“The administered probation office revealed the fact that, on January 20, 2026, around 05:00, while they were in front of a game room, in the mentioned sector, the suspect would have approached the injured person and asked for his mobile phone, and when the 28-year-old man would have asked him to return the property, the suspect would have physically assaulted him, running away with the property on him”, sent the General Directorate of Police of the Municipality of Bucharest.
The policemen from Section 19 detained the suspect for 24 hours and he will be presented to the court, with a proposal for preventive arrest.
