A 75-year-old from Genoa, northern Italy, unexpectedly learned that he was entitled to a pension and recovered outstanding benefits of EUR 106,000. So far, the man only received financial support intended for people in a particularly difficult life situation.

The ADNKronos news agency reported that the senior recently reported to the office that mediates contacts with INPS, the Italian equivalent of the Social Insurance Institution. He asked whether, due to his age, he was entitled to a benefit granted to older people who had no income or very low earnings.
The clerks reviewed his contribution history and discovered that the man once worked, among other things, as a sailor and was entitled to benefits for this reason.
The Genoese showed his seaman's book with a record of the period of payment of contributions, which were considered lost. Then it turned out that is entitled to a pension of EUR 1,400 per month and arrears of benefits of approximately EUR 106,000.
– Thanks to the competences of our employees, it was possible to solve an extremely difficult situation in which we managed to move from poverty to a real and due pension, resulting from our own contributions and a significant amount of arrears – explained the director of the office, Marco Paini.
He admitted that people are often not aware of their rights.
– There is nothing more satisfying for us than the moment when we manage to restore people's rights and peace of mind – added the director.
