Behind the scenes of the attack

“An unidentified person fired several shots at the man and fled the scene,” Russian investigators said in a statement. The general was taken to hospital in Moscow. Russia Today government sources said the general was in a serious condition.

Russian media, citing witnesses, wrote that Alexeyev was shot in the back with several shots at 7 a.m. (5 a.m. Polish time) when he left the apartment and was walking through the corridor towards the elevator.

Who is Vladimir Alekseev

Vladimir Alexeyev is the first deputy head of the GRU – Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. This is the former military intelligence service of the USSR, now of Russia.

Alexeyev took up his position in 2011. The media describe him as one of the main supervisors of the Russian “volunteer formations” taking part in the invasion of Ukraine. The independent website Meduza reminds that in June 2023, Alexeev, together with Deputy Minister of Defense Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, participated in negotiations with Yevgeny Prigozhin during his rebellion.

Ukrainian intelligence estimates that Alexeyev is also responsible for, among others, for organizing data needed for missile and air attacks on the territory of Ukraine and for “legalizing the Russian presence in the occupied territories by organizing the so-called referenda.”

In December 2016, the United States imposed sanctions on Alexeev in connection with cyberattacks intended to influence the US presidential elections. In 2019, the deputy head of the GRU was also subject to sanctions by the European Union in connection with poisoning of Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury, UK.
