The head of the French central bank, Francois Villeroy de Galhau, announced on Monday that he would step down from his position in June. The decision is considered unexpected because his term in this position expires in 2027.

The head of the Bank of France emphasized that he has been heading this institution for almost 11 years. He explained that he made the decision completely independently and a few days ago he discussed it with French President Emmanuel Macron. He estimated that the deadline by early June would allow for the appointment of his successor.
In a comment on social media, Minister of Economy and Finance Roland Lescure expressed appreciation for the commitment shown by Villeroy de Galhau as head of the central bank in the years when the economy was undergoing profound changes.
Villeroy de Galhau became the head of the central bank in 2015. In 2021, he was elected for another term, expiring in autumn 2027. The next head of the Bank of France would therefore be appointed by Macron's successor, selected in the presidential elections in spring 2027. In current polls of support for political forces, the far right is in first place. (PAP)
