The five best varieties of garlic – hot, large and long-lasting: for soups and preparations – I dig them up and enjoy until autumn

If you are planting garlic not only for the number of heads, but also for the rich taste and long shelf life, choose varieties that remain juicy, do not dry out in the spring and do not lose their aroma. This garlic can be added to borscht, marinated whole, used in homemade sauces and even in folk remedies for immunity.

Among the many options, I have selected five proven varieties that are pleasing both in the summer when harvesting and in the winter in jars.

1. Lyubasha

A variety with powerful, large heads up to 120 g and dense snow-white pulp. The cloves are even, easy to separate, the taste is sharp but balanced. It is stored until April, almost does not germinate. Ideal for pickling and daily use.

2. Sofievsky

Early ripening, productive, with purple streaks on the husk. The heads are medium, but very dense. It has a high content of essential oils and is often used for preventive purposes. Stored until March, resistant to fungi.

3. Spas

Late-ripening variety with large heads up to 150 g and thick, durable husk. The taste is rich, sharp, but without bitterness. It lasts until May, does not lose weight and does not dry out. Great for large families and winter preparations.

4. Sail

One of the most shelf-stable varieties, stored until June. The heads are round, the teeth are small, but there are many of them. The taste is soft, slightly sweet, ideal for pickling.

5. Gribovsky anniversary

A classic Russian variety, proven over decades. The heads are medium-sized, but very friendly, with snow-white flesh and a pronounced aroma. The yield is stable even in cool summers. It is stored until April, almost does not get sick.

Tips for long term storage:

  • After harvesting, dry the garlic for 7–10 days in the shade, under a canopy or on a glazed balcony.
  • Don't wash. Even drops of water cause mold.
  • Trim the arrows and roots, leaving a neck 3-4 cm long or braid it.
  • Store in a cool, dry place (1-3°C) in boxes, nets or hanging bundles.
  • Place a sprig of wormwood, lavender, or a couple of onion cloves in each box. This will repel pests without chemicals.
