February is considered the optimal time for sowing strawberries for seedlings. Right now the future harvest is being planted: the strength of the bushes and their fruiting in the season depend on the quality of the seeds, the timing of sowing and preparation. Despite their reputation as a finicky crop, strawberries from seeds grow well at home if you follow basic rules.
Early sowing is especially important for those who want to get a harvest in the first year or grow late and rare varieties. Correctly chosen timing helps the seedlings to get stronger and move on to planting in the ground without stress.
In February 2026, the most favorable days for sowing are considered February 6, 8–9, 14, 19–23 and 26.
In March, suitable dates are called 1, 6–9, 12, 15–17, 22, 24–27 and 30 March.
Seed preparation:
Before sowing, strawberry seeds need stratification – this is an imitation of winter conditions, which improves germination. To do this, the seeds are laid out between wet wipes, rolled up and placed in a container with a lid.
First, the container is kept for 1–2 days at room temperature, then put in the refrigerator for 10–14 days. It is important to ensure that the napkins do not dry out. Seeds that have swelled but have not yet begun to germinate are ready for sowing.
Soil and sowing
A light and loose substrate is suitable for seedlings. You can purchase it at a specialty store or prepare it yourself by mixing garden soil, humus, peat and sand in a 2:1:1 ratio.
A drainage layer of about 3 cm is placed at the bottom of the container, then soil is filled. The seeds are placed in shallow grooves at intervals of about 2 cm and only lightly sprinkled with soil, without deepening them.
After sowing, cover the container with film or a lid and place it in a warm place without direct sun. In the evening, it is advisable to illuminate the seedlings with a phytolamp.
Seedling care
The first shoots appear on average after 2–3 weeks. After this, the shelter is removed, and the seedlings begin to be watered regularly, preventing the soil from drying out.
When the plants have formed 4-5 true leaves, a pick is carried out – each seedling is transplanted into a separate cup.
To strengthen the plants, seedlings are fed with complex fertilizers and gradually hardened, taking them out onto the balcony or street. Strawberries are planted in open ground in early May, when the temperature remains stably above +15 °C.
