Arsenal legend Ian Wright (62) has hit out at former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim following his decision to drop Kobbie Mainoo (20) from the squad.

Wright's comments came after Mainoo put in another standout performance in United's recent 2-0 win over Tottenham, where he bagged an assist as he continued his comeback under interim manager Michael Carrick.

Prior to Amorim's sacking, United academy product Kobbie Mainoo had been largely ignored by the Lusitanian coach, making just one starting appearance this season in a Carabao Cup defeat against Grimsby Town.

However, since Carrick took over and immediately reinstated him in the starting line-up, Mainoo has found his form.

Speaking as a pundit to Premier League World, Wright did not hold back in his criticism of the sacked Portuguese coach.

Everyone was confused about what was happening under Ruben Amorim. When you look at Kobbie, someone who hasn't played, coming into a Manchester United team that's not in great shape, to play in that midfield where you just see the quality.

I think it's very embarrassing for Ruben Amorimif we're being totally honest. Because what we saw was a product of Manchester United's academy who was not given the opportunity to play and who was very, very close to leaving the club. It was brilliant today, magnificent“, said Ian Wright, according to the Daily Mail.

Mainoo's performance against Spurs drew widespread praise, not just for his clever pass to Bryan Mbeumo's opener, but also for his commanding presence in midfield alongside Casemiro. Carrick praised the young star but urged caution.

There's no doubt about Kobbie's ability or what he can bring,” said Carrick. “He's still so young, so let's be careful not to put too much pressure on his shoulders and not expect too much from him. Credit to him, he's come in straight away and found his groove, which isn't easy after a spell out.

– Michael Carrick

Since Carrick's appointment, Mainoo has played every minute of all four matches, contributing to wins against Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham and Spurs, and providing two assists.
