“They said they want to do everything in June. And they're going to do everything they can to make sure the war ends.”said Zelenski, whose statements were transmitted on Saturday by the Ukrainian news agency Ukrinform, quoted by Agerpres.

“The Americans are proposing that the parties end the war this summer. And they will probably put pressure on the parties according to their agenda. Why this summer? We understand that their domestic issues in the United States have an impact and will be even more relevant to them.” explained the Ukrainian president.

Zelenskiy alluded to the upcoming US midterm elections, votes that “will be more important” for American politicians than international affairs.

Zelenskiy said November's US congressional elections are a top priority for Washington, suggesting the United States wants quick progress on ending the war, possibly by June.

He stated that Ukraine has already proposed a phased peace plan, which sets out the steps that should be followed by each side, if Russia is willing to stop the conflict.

The leader in Kiev did not provide details on the content of the plan, but stressed that setting the terms is essential if Moscow accepts the negotiations. At the same time, Washington proposed a meeting between the Ukrainian and Russian delegations in Miami, in about a week, a proposal accepted by Kiev.

The Ukrainian president reiterated that the security guarantees are a key element in ending the war and that they must be signed before any other documents.

After two rounds of talks in Abu Dhabi, brokered by the US, the only concrete result of which was an exchange of prisoners of war, with no further progress on the fundamental issues, Ukraine has yet to obtain the security guarantees it considers a prerequisite for any agreement or vote.

“Kiev's position is that no agreement can be reached until security guarantees for Ukraine from the United States and partners are put in place,” a source told Reuters.
