The accident occurred around 18 local time. The speeding tram hit the building. The first information talked about three fatalities, now we know that this number has increased to at least 15.
The iconic yellow trams are a popular tourist attraction in the capital of Portugal. Recordings available on social media show a shattered wagon just after the tragedy. You can still see the dust clouds erected after the accident.
It is known that some of the injured people were trapped inside the wreck. Emergency services helped them. 62 policemen, firefighters and representatives of medical services were involved in the action.
Lisbon authorities say it is too early to determine the cause of this event. The prosecutor's office, as well as the State Commission for the Investigation of Railway Accidents took care of this. It is not known if they died in the accident they were citizens of Portugal or foreigners.
