Abusive calls to the emergency number 112 are still high, but the trend has changed in the last decade

The number of unjustified calls to 112 has decreased in recent years, but remains high, according to information provided on Saturday by the Special Telecommunications Service (STS), on the occasion of the 22nd anniversary of the operationalization of the unique emergency number, writes Agerpres.
The year 2025 marked the lowest level of unjustified calls since the launch of the 112 number, respectively 36.16% of the total number of calls, according to the quoted source.
Thus, the STS operators of 112 managed over 8.8 million calls last year, of which almost 64% required the intervention of the authorities.
“The evolution of the last 10 years shows that in 2025 the number of non-urgent calls was three times lower than in 2015. (…) In terms of abusive calls, there is also a decrease of 10.47% compared to 2024. The number of people who call repeatedly or with malicious intent is still significant: 2,262,177 such calls were answered in 2025. In these cases, according to the legislation, the Special Telecommunications Service reports the cases of people who call 112 abusively to the Romanian Police, in order to identify and sanction them”, the STS press release states.
The counties with the highest level of unjustified calls to 112 are Argeș, Gorj and Vrancea, while Cluj, Bucharest-Ilfov and Bihor are at the opposite pole.
Currently, five complementary methods of locating emergency calls are available in Romania, of which the solution based on determined location information (ILD) is unique at the European level, states STS.
