Man from Târgu Jiu, detained after pretending to be a lawyer and defrauding several drivers

A man from Târgu Jiu was detained by the police on Thursday, February 5, after defrauding several drivers to whom he promised to get their driving licenses back in court, pretending to be a lawyer. He has also been detained in the past for bribery, writes the local press.

“On February 5, 2026, at around 2:00 p.m., police officers from the Târgu Jiu Municipal Police – Criminal Investigations Bureau reported ex officio that a 66-year-old man from Târgu Jiu, in the period 2022-2025, without holding the title of lawyer and without having the legal right to exercise this profession, induced in error several people who allegedly committed traffic violations, offering legal assistance and promising to win actions in court, in order to regain driving licenses, an activity for which he was remunerated with amounts between 300 euros and 3,500 lei.

In the case, a criminal case was drawn up for the commission fraud offencesunlawful exercise of a profession or activity, material falsification in official documents and use of forgery.

Also, on February 5, 2026, following the investigations carried out against the man, detention was ordered based on an ordinance for 24 hours, and he was placed in the Detention and Preventive Arrest Center within the IPJ Gorj”IPJ Gorj sent today.

According to Gorj Online, Laurențiu Florin Duță, aged 66, was also convicted for practicing the same method in the neighboring county, Vâlcea.

In 2016, the defendant went to court at the Horezu Court and posed as a lawyer, falsifying documents and asking for money for his services. He was sent to court, the Vâlcea Bar being a civil party in the process.

He submitted in a civil file a delegation that he claimed was issued by the Vâlcea Bar, but which he later modified, writing with a pen that it was issued by the Gorj Bar. The judge noticed the forgery and notified the prosecutors, requesting the opening of a criminal investigation.

In 2000, when he was a policeman, he was arrested from a simigeria in the center of the city, being investigated for bribery, after allegedly selling the “baccalaureate exam” to gullible young people, adds the cited publication.
