The State Department wrote that “Instead of investing in the well-being of its people and its crumbling infrastructure, the Iranian regime is financing destabilization activities around the world and strengthening repression at home.“.
“As long as the Iranian regime seeks to circumvent sanctions and extract oil and petrochemical revenues to finance such oppressive behavior and support the activities of terrorists and proxies, the United States will take action to hold both the Iranian regime and its partners accountable,” it said.
The ministry assured that President Donald Trump is striving to “curbing the Iranian regime's illicit exports of oil and petrochemicals as part of the administration's maximum pressure campaign“.
The Americans impose sanctions on Iran and continue talks
The sanctions were announced on the day when U.S.-Iranian negotiations took place in Oman, lasting several hours. As Axios reported, both sides suggested further meetings in the coming days.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi said that Iran talks to the American side only about nuclear issues.
Both sides assured their readiness to resume negotiations on the Iranian nuclear program, which raises concerns in the West. However, Washington wanted to expand the topic of talks to include Iran's ballistic missile program, Tehran's support for armed groups in the region such as Hamas in the Gaza Strip and the Houthis in Yemen, as well as the treatment of its own citizens by the Iranian authorities.
Iranian officials have repeatedly said they will not discuss missiles. They also emphasized that they wanted recognition of the fact that Iran has the right to enrich uranium.
