Iran gives up GPS in favor of BeiDou. A breakthrough change in technology

During the fighting, the GPS signal was jammed, which not only disrupted the functioning of the guidance systems for Iranian drones and missiles, but also affected almost a thousand civilian ships and aircraft. This situation caused serious economic problems in the country.

The formal shutdown of GPS in Iran took place in the middle of last year, and by the end of it the infrastructure had been completely switched to the Chinese BeiDou. Iran thus joined the group of 120 countries that decided to limit their dependence on Western technology.

The Chinese BeiDou system, operating since 2020, is becoming more and more popular, especially in Africa. It is used by over 30 countries, including Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal and Tunisia. Moreover, according to the U.S. Government Advisory Council on GPS, Chinese technology now exceeds the capabilities of the American system. In 2023, the council admitted that “GPS capabilities are currently significantly inferior to those of China's BeiDou.”
