What does Russia say about its next steps after the treaty expires?

What were the restrictions in the New START Treaty?

Why does Russia consider the US decision wrong?

The document also emphasized that “the Russian Federation intends to act responsibly and prudently (…) in the field of strategic armaments.” According to the announcement, the basis for these activities will be: “an in-depth analysis of US military policy and the overall strategic situation.”

Russia on the extension of the treaty: we have not received a response from the US

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs called “erroneous and regrettable” the decision of the US authorities to no longer comply with the limits on the number of missiles and nuclear warheads specified in the treaty that expires on Thursday, February 5.

Moscow noted that has not yet received a formal response from Washington to its proposal on continued compliance with New START. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Russia was ready to take action “decisive military-technical countermeasures to mitigate potential threats to national security.”

The New START Treaty, which expires on Thursday, applies reduction of nuclear arsenals, and the USA and Russia concluded it for 15 years. So far, there has been no information about resuming talks on extending the agreement, which – in the opinion of many commentators – may result in a new nuclear arms race.
